Which cremation urns will you choose? Urn Faq's. Information and frequently asked questions.

What is an urn?

Cremation urns are container's that hold cremated remains. They come in many different shapes, sizes and materials. Custom urns can make a wonderful keepsake!

Where can you place cremation urns? They can be placed in your home, columbarium, mausoleum, or buried in the ground.

How do I Determine the correct urn?

Urns are normally not an item that people regularly buy. There are a few things that you should to take into consideration:

Capacity: A standard urn's capacity for an adult is at least 200 cubic inches. Please see: What size urn do I need?

Size: If you plan to place the urn in a mausoleum niche or perhaps on a mantel, you need to know if it will fit. Your retailer will provide you the height, width, and length of their products.

Material: Are you looking for durability? Elegance? Or perhaps an antique look? Choose the material that’s right for your need. There are many different materials to choose from such as bronze, brass, wood, crystal, glass, marble, and now, aluminum.

What size urn do I need?

Please follow this rule of thumb to determine the size urn you need:

Formula: 1 pound body weight = 1 cubic inch ash.

The age of a person may affect this formula because the older a person is, the less bone mass they may have. Using the above formula though, ensures that you purchase an urn that is the right size 99% of the time.

How do I transfer ashes into an urn?

Our aluminum urns open from the bottom with a threaded lid, and can be permanently sealed with epoxy. Wood urns may just have removable lids or open from the bottom with screws.

Where can I keep an urn?

An urn can be stored in a variety of locations. A mausoleum or columbarium is one alternative. Another is in the home. Some choose to be buried in a family plot. Others ask for their remains to be scattered at sea or on land. Again, it's a matter of personal choice, but there are a number of alternatives that burial doesn't offer.
